Discovering My New Fall Fragrances with Diptyque

Discovering My New Fall Fragrances with Diptyque

Scent is such a powerful thing. It has the ability to recall memories, create emotions, and is an essential element of attraction. Every now and again I'll smell something that sends me back in time. In an instant, memories come flooding back – along with emotions that feel as vivid as they were then. I'm all about personal discovery this fall, which includes a unique journey with fragrance. I was so thrilled (seriously, like really really excited) when Diptyque asked me to come experience their new fragrance discovery at Nordstrom's Bellevue location!

I believe a huge expression of who we are comes from the scent we associate with. I know several people who keep to one fragrance and never stray, but I like to use different scents to convey the type of mood I'm in, or vary between seasons. Since we are out of summer and into fall, I really wanted a complete shake-up. Out with the old and in with the new – what better way than to try out some new fragrances!

As I mentioned in my monochromatic story a few weeks ago, Diptyque is known for their captivating fragrances. Each scent is so unforgettable and unique – they simply can't be duplicated. The brand's oh-so chic and iconic black lettering can instantly be identified along with their broad oval label. Everything behind the brand has a story, including the names, blends and sketches on their fragrances. Picking up a bottle is like holding a piece of art, so why should the way you sample scents be any less grand?

Diptyque's new fragrance discovery in Bellevue is the most beautiful fragrance display I've ever seen. It takes references from a grand piano and an artist's colored pencil box, and illuminates bottles from underneath to create a stunning display. Visual grandeur isn't the only thing this display has, however. In front of every bottle sits a small marble box, housing a sample of that fragrance. When you lift up this little box, the lid pops open and you're able to experience the most pure expression of that scent.

Unlike conventional scent sampling – aka spraying a small paper strip and waving it around like a ninny - these little boxes are a lovely way to sample several fragrances in a row. I was greeted at the counter by Richard, who explained the various stories behind the scents as I sampled. It was such a wonderful way to get acquainted with each scent and understand the memories and emotions that went into their creation.

I think I sampled each scent about five times! I went up and down the rows, raising and lowering the marble boxes until I was sure of my decision. Once I was ready, Richard packaged everything up in a beautiful little bag.

My New Fall Fragrances

Okay, so maybe I couldn't decide on just one – I told you I like variety! I've fallen in love with quite a few fragrances and just couldn't narrow it down. I'm so excited to have some new scents on rotation this fall!

Here's what I got, along with a list of their scent notes:

  • Philosykos Eau de Toilette: Fig Leaves and Wood, White Cedar

  • Tam Dao Eau de Toilette: Sandalwood, Rosewood, Cypress, Ambergris

  • Florabellio Eau de Toilette: Apple blossom, marine accord, coffee

  • Eau des Sens Eau de Toilette: Orange blossom, juniper berries, patchouli

  • Vetyverio Eau de Parfum: Vetiver, Patchouli, Grapefruit, and Rose

Each of these bottles has a label uniquely designed for the fragrance within. If you flip the bottle around, you'll see a secret sketch on the inside of the label. Florabellio was love at first sniff, but after Richard told me the story behind it and showed me the sketch through the back, I couldn't help but grow more fond of it. It was inspired by the childhood memories of Christiane Gautrot (one of Diptyque's founders) that took place in the seaside village of Barfleur, Normandy. The site describes it as a fragrance created as an olfactory landscape: in the foreground, invigorating and salty sea spray mingles with the vegetal bitterness of sea fennel. It then develops around soft and sensual apple blossom, and in the background, like an optical illusion, swirling wafts of roasted coffee with toasted sesame accents. On the back of the bottle, you can see this seaside setting.

Through this experience I've discovered I'm partial to two scent families - floral and woody. I've always gravitated towards these when it comes to home fragrances, but until now I had no idea how well they played with my skin's chemistry.
